When I started out working on this website, it was essentially about me - lots and lots of information about me, down to the last detail - what I did, where I worked, everything. It was a fairly static website, and I got a little wary of just how many details I put up on here. I pulled a lot of it.
Later, as I became involved in online journalling, other aspects of the site would grow. The Journal was added of its own right.
But the largest section by far these days on the site, and the part the receives the most attention from casual visitors. It started off very simple - originally there was only a few photos of myself, which mostly were taken at various bear events, but there was much more to come.
How did the you get into photography?
I've always been interested in photography - having taken photos from various events back in my high-school years with an old Kodak instamatic "point and shoot" camera borrowed from my mother. I still have those photos in shoeboxes and look at them from time to time.
Interestingly, when I first started taking photos on a trip to Fiji, I took pictures of buildings, scenes, etc. When I came home, my mother expressed dismay that I didn't take any of the people - I learnt to take it from there. I photographed various major weekend camps, etc., and then at university started to take photos of social events, and then moved into capturing people during their ordinary daily lives - eating, socialising, partying, studying, working and sleeping. One of the most interesting photos was me getting dragged through a huge pile of leaves on an Autumn May - you can just see legs and arm, and people holding onto them, a pile of leaves going everywhere. Social photos became more of an interest. I bought a 35mm camera, the Pentax Espio 70S, and took loads of photos of various big events.
So when did you start doing bear photography?
I first bought a digital camera in November 2000 - a Kodak DC3400, and immediately took it to the US and started photographing everyone and everything, and put them up on my website, which I found to be a fun way to share them with everyone - but it was essentially small, and limited to friends
Since Lynn Ludwig started Ludwig Photos and later, ShutterBear.com, I've been a huge fan. And I couldn't help but think about how he was promoting US bear events, and how I wanted someone to do the same for promoting Australian bear events - and hopefully encourage a few people to come over and see Australia that otherwise wouldn't have! I originally started a section on the website called "The OzBear Galleries", but when I managed to set up the Gallery Script on the Photos section of the website, and then it started to explode - I've been able to quickly and easily get lots of photos up.
Going to bear events and taking photos is a great way to meet people - and most bears seem to be happy about being photographed, too.
What camera do you you use?
I use the Canon PowerShot G3, which I purchased in November 2003. It's a brilliant camera, and while it's not a professional camera, it's got enough functionality to keep me happy.
I'm working on extending its more advanced features.
Until then, enjoy the Galleries!
